Y.I.S.D. and Riverside High School has dedicated time and resources to offer future students a chance to explore a possible career in the Criminal Justice and Law Profession. The program is compromised of two tracks, each with a different elective that focuses on either the study of law or law enforcement. Today's Law Enforcement has grown beyond the traditional guide lines due to technology and the threat of world terrorism. Law Enforcement Professionals take a front line role in protecting not only their community but the nation against threats of corruption, drugs and weapons of mass destruction. The future and safety of our great nation rests on the ability of the Law Enforcement to work together in the Legislative and Judicial branch of America no Matter at what level or capacity they act in. A career in Law Enforcement includes job opportunities with such agencies as El Paso Police Department, El Paso County Sheriff's Department, Department of Public Safety (State Trooper),ODNI,FEMA, FBI, DEA, BATF, U.S. Secret Service, Department of Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection, EPA, IRS, and Department of Corrections in State and Federal Institutions to include Department of Probation and Parole. The Riverside High School Law Enforcement Program is divided in four phases which start the first year of school and continue for the rest of the four years.

PHASE ONE: BCIS

PHASE TWO FIRST SEMESTER: Fundamentals of Criminal Law: A study of the nature of criminal law, its philosophical and historical development with major definitions and concepts. A study of the classifications of crime and elements of crimes and penalties using Texas statutes as illustrations in addition to criminal responsibilities.

PHASE TWO SECOND SEMESTER:Criminal Investigation: This course provides a basic understanding of investigative theory, collection and preservation of evidence, and sources of information. Methods of conducting interviews and interrogations will also be covered. Students will also be provided opportunities to discover uses of forensic sciences, and prepare for cases and trials. This course will also cover officer safety and tactics which are now needed in today's real world threat to law enforcement and security personal while investigating a mere traffic stop to an act of terrorism.

PHASE THREE FIRST SEMESTER:UNDERSTANDING AND COMBATING TERRORISM: This is a course designed to provide a study of terrorism, the reasons America is a target of terrorism and vulnerabilities, threat and risk assessment. The course will cover the domestic and international aspects of terrorism, narcoterrorism, environmental, weapons of mass destruction, and cyberterrorism. It will cover the political and diplomatic methods of combating terrorism as well as the nature of the threat.

PHASE THREE SECOND SEMESTER:CERT:This course will train students as first responders following a major disaster, utilizing the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) model curriculum, adopted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The CERT curriculum is focused on disaster preparedness, safety and prevention, and immediate disaster services. Students will understand the facts regarding immediate services available following a disaster; develop necessary skills to implement disaster preparedness education training, receive training on life saving skills, problem solving skills, rescuer safety and triage, and develop a plan for implementation and education.

PHASE FOUR FIRST SEMESTER: Introduction to Security Service: This course includes history and philosophy of security and ethical considerations; the nature and impact of security; and skills for security officer and security specialist training and certification; organization of personnel; risk analysis and surveys; security applications; security problems; and the future of security.

PHASE FOUR SECOND SEMESTER: Security Services: A laboratory course designed to provide job specific training for entry-level employment in security services careers. Instruction includes security patrol procedures; use of computers and communications systems; understanding procedures and limits of apprehension and detention; licensing certification requirements; goals of investigation, interview, and interrogation; understanding crime prevention devices, equipment, and procedures; and demonstrating ability to provide oral and written reports, safety and career opportunities.

Security Service includes law enforcement protective service at local, state and federal levels such as security at key infrastructure facilities, judiciary buildings, detention and corrections, military installations, as well as U. S. Government interests in foreign lands.
