Monday, 8/24/09:  Journal entry:  Describe your typical morning/waking up scenario.  Be very detailed. Students will receive student/teacher expectations handout, take notes on class/school procedures and polices, and begin brainstorming list of possible wall decorations for classroom.

Tuesday, 8/25:  JOUR: Describe your room, using vivid details and images.  Students will receive handout for wall decoration expository essay and begin first draft of essay.

Wednesday, 8/26: JOUR: Respond to this quote--"To gain that which is worth having, it may be necessary to lose everything else." Students will receive list of Latin/Greek roots for PSAT/SAT preparation. Continue with draft of wall decoration essay.  Quiz over designated roots on Monday, 8/31!

Thursday, 8/27:  Exercise using root words.(15 min).  Begin reading from "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God," pages 100-104.  Complete Active Reading Guide handout as you read. Finish for homework.

Friday, 8/28:  Turn in Active Reading Guide.  Essay and Wall Decoration Due.  Presentations will begin.  REMINDER:  Root quiz on MONDAY, 8/31! Also: You must have your notebook, dividers, tissues and other supplies on Monday.

Monday, 8/31/09: JOUR: How do you ask for something from your parents? What strategies do you use to get them to agree to things?  To what emotions do you try to appeal?  Students will take latin prefix quiz.  Continue discussion/review of "Sinners in the Hands..." Notebook check.

Tuesday, 9/1/09:  JOUR:  Continue yesterday's topic.  "Sinners" quiz review.  Read Patrick Henry's Speech to the 2nd Va. Convention, pages 146-149.  Complete study guide handout as we read.  Handout 2nd set of Latin/Greek roots and prefixes. 

Wednesday, 9/2/09:  JOUR:  What's the difference between an argument and a fight?  Give specific examples from your own experience.  Quiz "Sinners..." Discuss expository essays/successes/areas of improvement.  Continue 2nd Va. speech discussion/study guide.

Thursday, 9/3/09:  JOUR:  Continue yesterday's assignment.  Quiz-Patrick Henry.  Essay question:  Compare/contrast the rhetorical strategies of Jonathan Edwards and Patrick Henry.

Friday, 9/4/09:  JOUR:  Argue for or against the need for extracurricular activities in school (sports, clubs, arts, music, drama, etc.)

Tuesday, 9/8/09:  Opening Activity (OA):  JOUR- Evaluate your first two weeks of school.  How have you done so far?  Are you behind?  What overall grade would you give yourself in the following categories:  Attendance?  Paying attention?  Getting work done on time?  Staying organized?  Remembering what you have to do? etc.  Read "Declaration of Independence," pages 169-172.  Use study/review handout to guide your reading.

EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY:  Access the text of President Obama's speech online. See button at left:  "EXTRA CREDIT: RHETORICAL ANALYSIS." Analyze it for rhetorical strategies as we did for "Sinners" and Patrick Henry's speech to the Va. convention.  Look for TONE, ALLUSIONS, REPETITION, PARALLELISM, RHETORICAL QUESTIONS, METAPHOR/SIMILE, etc.  Due Friday, 9/11/09. 

Wednesday, 9/9/09:  OA: Latin root exercise.  Socratic Discussion over "Declaration of Independence."  Participation grade.  Notebook check.

Thursday, 9/10/09:  OA: JOUR- Look back at your self-evaluation for Tuesday.  What strategies do you plan to use to improve your performance?  What help do you need?  What is ONE thing you could change about your routine, attitude, habits, etc. that would be helpful to your academic performance? Quiz-"Declaration of Independence."  vocabulary-"The Minister's Black Veil" page 265.

Friday, 9/11/09:  OA: JOUR- Write all the details you can remember about the day of September 11, 2001.  Be as detailed as you possibly can.  Begin reading "The Minister's Black Veil." pages 266-275.  Use study guide handout to guide reading/comprehension.
